I paint in my studio on the Milwaukee River in Mequon, Wisconsin. The preservation of our wild areas is important to me, and I hope my statements in oil on canvas invite a closer look at the mystery and miracle and fragility of woodlands wild creatures and waters of Wisconsin. Using light and atmosphere to tell a story, the paintings often show a myth-like reality of a time and place of importance and power that only nature lends.
Working in watercolor/gouache for many years informs the often-thin layers of atmosphere the oils start with. Painting small for illustrations have led me to now love painting large, to put a voice to the magic and majesty of our outdoors.
Mauriah Donegan Kraker is a midwesterner, a collaborative performance maker, a walker, improviser, teacher. She is an advocate for slow travel: walking around the block and through the city as a means of attending to choreographic unfolding of time cycles in the body + land.
Mauriah’s background in athletics (competing as an Olympic-level athlete, touring with Pilobolus Dance Company, and being raised in a family that walked and biked everywhere) is a driver in the creation of physical works that live somewhere in the realms of dancing and walking. She has led folks on site walks through the Italian Alps, sound walks in southern France, and outings to highway underpasses and prairies in the Midwest- the walks culminating in participatory scores and dance performance. She has taught at Universities and cultural centers throughout the US and Europe, facilitating movement workshops that draw on sounding, walking, improvisatory, and outdoor practices.
Through ARTservancy + in partnership with the River Revitalization Foundation, Mauriah attends to the Milwaukee River, for a year (oct 2020- sept 2021). Each month, she offers outdoor walking and movement practices open to the community as a safe space of congregation, restoration, communion. These practices are based on shifts in weather, temperature, and observations of the river. Her time at the river will culminate in a series of events, mid-summer, ranging from service oriented gatherings to river walks, and site specific performances in and along the river. Stay tuned…

I use family portraits to express the search for memory. When looking at a photograph, so many memories arise, not all of which are necessarily about the photograph. One memory can lead to another, ending far from where one has begun. I aim to capture the truth and complexity of one memory. Patterns of communication, relationships, and personalities are represented through family portraits. I am interested in dissecting characteristics and connecting them visually. Rather than nostalgia, memory serves as a visual history. The portraits become metaphors for maps describing time, place and linear movement.

Andrea Cole - Jewelry
Cedarburg Environmental Study Area - Ozaukee Washington Land Trust
Since childhood I have kept an eye to the ground, looking for interesting rocks and
treasures, while also admiring beautiful cut stones and natural minerals. Through
my professional career working in the corporate world as an electrical engineer, I
sought a creative outlet and found metalsmithing to be the perfect fit: Technically-
based and artfully imagined.
I create wearable works of art in a variety of metals, often including raw and cut
stones, enameled pieces, and freshwater pearls.

I love the ingenuity of art. I believe art should be fun, playful, and experimental. As a personal rule, I don’t take anything too seriously. Art is a mind let loose! Art is a dream that we artists create.
Spontaneity helps capture the unconscious. The opening burst of creativity sets the tone for the ensuing work of art - often utilizing whatever materials happen to be handy at the time. Working fast and loose, the emotions become nearly tangible. This opening push is carefully considered, as my own personal Rorschach test. I wrangle the mess. I enjoy a controlled mess.
My art is a product of me and my surrounding environment - a peek inside my mind. I weave a dreamscape of the real along with the imagined. The goal is to start a conversation. I like creating never before seen images and sharing a moment with the viewer. There are infinite possibilities in the realm of art; it is this that excites me the most.

Megan Johnson - Painter
Hepburn Preserve - Ozaukee Washington Land Trust
By combining vintage paper ephemera, paint, various drawing media and found objects
I create heavily layered mixed media paintings with bold color, strong composition and
rich detail.
Inspired by how accumulated every-day experiences create our histories, I love how
mundane and monumental moments layer up to build the person we are. Better yet:
when we interact with others who are built from their own experiences, not only do we
add to one another’s histories just by meeting, we begin to find commonalities in many
of our individual experiences.
My abstract 2D work builds up layers of collage, paint and mark-making to create imag-
inary records of these moments converging. I approach each piece by engaging with
the nostalgia called forth by vintage collage material, to which I add my own contempo-
rary influence through line, shape, gesture and color. Planning and organization merges
with spontaneity and surprise, elements recede into the background, then peek out be-
tween new marks. The result is a celebration of the complexity of a single moment.

Haley Krob - Papercutting Artist
Urban Ecology Center - Milwaukee River Greenway
Ecology and conservation have always been a part of my artistic practice. In my most recent work I used handmade paper dyed with natural dyes to create collages depicting the vast interconnectedness that exists in the natural world, while exploring where we as humans fit into the natural world. Although the majority of what I use are natural dyes and recycled materials, I know there is a whole world of foraging that could expand not just my color palette, but my understanding of the natural world and our place in it. I would love to learn more about how deforestation affects the forest and the communication networks that lie underground.

Kathryn Martin - Installation Artist
Kratzsch Conservancy - Ozaukee Washington Land Trust
With a focus on observing everyday objects, spaces and histories, kathryn e. martin concentrates on formal characteristics. With found forms she makes instinctive, calculated decisions to dissect, interpret, repeat and re-assemble inspired parts into new, often times immersive sculptural landscapes.

Alecia McBride - Illustration & Multi Media Artist
Lake Michigan Bird Observatory
I am a multidisciplinary artist and self-identified ornithologist creating work from personal experiences. Ideas of bird ethics, anatomy with both human or bird form, and aesthetics of Wisconsin bird life reveals personal emotions, location, and memories formed from trauma. Usage of personification of birds helps show the disillusion of home and relationships within my upbringing. Throughout my pieces, a consistent theme is usage of paint as a medium to not only show grace of the animals but also mental states at the current moment.

Megan Muthupandiyan - Poet & Illustration
Tall Pines Conservancy
I am a multi-media poet who works in illustration, photography and film. My work reflect a sustained curiosity about desire--how it shapes us, how it grounds our understanding of beauty, and in the end, most importantly, how it helps us foster a kinship with the natural world and all of its transcendences. We think of desire as a consummately human experience; my work seeks to look beyond it, toward the desires expressed by a world ever coming into being itself.

Emily Rudolph - Illustrator
Huiras Lake - Ozaukee Washington Land Trust
I want to produce a body of work inspired by a specific location in nature. I create drawings and paintings that examine the relationship between people and their surroundings, through pattern and color. As a resident in ARTservancy, I'll be able to study the patterns in nature, and expand the breadth of my work from interior settings to nature focued ones. Land conservation is important and I believe my art can help initiate conversations surrounding the beauty of nature, and how necessary it is to take care of it.

Ally Wilber - Smoke Drawings, Murals, & Painter
Lake Michigan Bird Observatory
I am currently interested in dichotomy and relationships between the beautiful and the unsettling; evocative imagery which both disturbs and intrigues. I like pushing the viewer to respond to the discomfort they might experience when interacting with my work, as well as interrogate the roots of their associations with symbols. Nature seems to be a reoccurring trend in my recent work, reflecting my home and childhood in the woods of northern Wisconsin.
